What drives the cost
The package is built from several components rather than a single number, which is why quotes differ between hospitals.
- Surgeon, anaesthesia and operating theatre time
- Robotic instrument and consumable charges
- Room category and length of stay, including any ICU nights
- Investigations, blood products, staplers and implants
- Histopathology and, where indicated, molecular testing
Insurance and reimbursement
Most Indian insurers cover cancer surgery, including robotic procedures, subject to policy limits and sub-limits on consumables. Pre-authorisation is arranged by the hospital's TPA desk. Government and corporate schemes vary in whether the robotic component is reimbursed; this is confirmed before scheduling.
Getting an estimate
Bring your imaging and biopsy reports to the consultation. Once the planned procedure is known, an itemised estimate with a likely range is issued in writing, along with the circumstances that could change it — for example conversion to open surgery or an unplanned ICU stay.
Common questions
- Is the extra cost of robotic surgery worthwhile?
- That depends on the operation. In narrow-pelvis and complex cases the technical advantage is meaningful; for other procedures laparoscopy gives equivalent results at lower cost, and that is recommended honestly.
- Are follow-up visits included?
- Early post-operative reviews are usually part of the surgical package. Ongoing surveillance imaging and systemic therapy are billed separately.
