How to prepare for cancer surgery

Good preparation shortens recovery. Walking daily, stopping smoking, eating enough protein, controlling blood sugar and blood pressure, and bringing a complete list of your medicines all measurably reduce complications after cancer surgery.

The weeks before an operation are an opportunity, not just a wait.

Movement: a daily walk builds the lung and heart reserve you will draw on afterwards. Breathing exercises help prevent chest infections.

Smoking and alcohol: stopping smoking, even four weeks before, reduces wound and lung complications. Alcohol should be stopped.

Nutrition: aim for adequate protein. If you have lost weight, tell the team — a short course of nutritional supplements before surgery can help.

Medical conditions: diabetes and blood pressure should be under control. Blood thinners, diabetes medicines and herbal supplements may need to be adjusted, so bring every medicine box or a written list to your consultation.

On the day: follow the fasting instructions given to you, and bring your scans and reports.
